Netafim Series 80 Globe Valve Built for Battery Control
Battery controllers and solar-fed DC systems need a valve that does not drain them, and that is the point of this build. Item 71610-014061 puts a 12VDC latching solenoid on the straight-through 1-1/2 in Series 80 globe body. A brief pulse of one polarity opens it, a pulse of the other closes it, and in between the coil draws nothing. The body handles 0.25 to 110 GPM between 7 and 150 psi, with water up to 140°F. Pressure loss runs about 3.3 psi at 20 GPM, 4.3 psi at 60 GPM and 5.5 psi at 100 GPM. It is a 2-way, normally closed valve with an integrated check valve on this size. Glass-reinforced polyamide forms the body, bonnet and diaphragm seat. Nuts, bolts and washers are 304 stainless, and the spring is AISI 302 stainless. Overall it measures roughly 6-9/16 x 6-1/2 x 6-3/8 in and weighs about 2 lb. Command water feeds through a labyrinth inlet that keeps working on dirty or reclaimed water.
Wiring a DC Latching Solenoid in the Field
This configuration belongs on blocks without AC power: field plots, outlying nursery beds, rented ground and seasonal crops that move. It also suits DC control systems that drive latching outputs from a panel. The coil will not run from the AC station terminals of a standard sprinkler timer, so plan the controller first. Keep polarity straight on both wires. A reversed pair turns every open command into a close command and leaves the block dry. Seat the valve upright in a box or on a manifold with the flow arrow downstream, since the 2-way design prefers vertical mounting. The flow control stem trims flow for balancing or shuts the zone by hand while you work on laterals. One trade-off comes with any latching coil. It stays wherever it was last pulsed, so a controller that dies mid-cycle can leave a zone running. Fresh batteries at the start of each season remove most of that risk.
Key Features
- 12VDC latching solenoid: Switches on short DC pulses and draws no holding current, which keeps battery drain low.
- Straight globe body: Inline 1-1/2 in body drops straight into a mainline or manifold run.
- 0.25-110 GPM range: One valve covers a small drip block or a large multi-lateral zone.
- Flow control stem: Throttles or fully closes the zone by hand for balancing and repairs.
- Labyrinth inlet: Keeps the control chamber working on dirty or reclaimed water without an internal filter.
- Normally closed with check valve: Stays shut until it is pulsed open.
