A spring frost night is when a full-coverage block has to run without a single head stalling. This rotating impact head is Netafim item 63600-003000, model MGN24D-242HO, with the brown nozzle cap. The brown nozzle has a 3.08 mm orifice and a nominal flow of 2.42 GPM at 33 psi. Its stream leaves at a high 24° angle for a long, even throw over open ground. Two identical jets drive a rotating turbine, which keeps the head balanced through long runs. A filter built into the inlet stops grit before it reaches the nozzle. The pop-up mechanism opens only while water flows, sealing out insects and dust when the block is dry. UV-protected materials hold up to weather, sunlight and the nutrients injected into the line. Running the Brown Nozzle as a Frost Protection Sprinkler

Overhead frost runs work because freezing water releases heat onto the buds and the air around them. Ice has to keep forming, so the system starts before the air drops to about 36°F and runs until the ice melts away. A design rate near 0.12 in of water per hour is a common target where air holds above about 23°F. On a 33 x 39 ft grid this nozzle applies about 0.18 to 0.20 in per hour, comfortably above that mark. At 36 psi it flows about 2.43 GPM, and about 2.66 GPM at 44 psi. Keep pressure between 29 and 44 psi at the head, and confirm the pump can hold it across the whole block at once. Install and test the system before the frost season, not on the first cold night. Rinse the inlet filter each season and never run a head with the filter removed. Inspect the cover and turbine tabs for wear before each season. Replace both parts together after about 2,000 irrigation hours.
