What the Organic Coco Planting Mix Expands Into

This is coco coir shipped as a compressed block rather than as loose medium in a sack. Add water and it opens out to more than 2.5 cu ft of growing medium. Dry, the block moves at 10.15 lb. That is why a pallet of these carries far more medium than a pallet of bagged soil. It is also why one person can lift a block onto a shelf. The mix is organic coco coir, OMRI listed, and its UPC is 638104002547. It is sold for flowers, vegetables, herbs and anything else that puts down roots, indoors or outside. Hydroponic systems are the other half of the use case, where coir behaves as an inert substrate rather than as a feed. Coir is the husk fibre of the coconut, and what makes it useful is the ratio of fibre to pith. Pith holds water much the way peat does. Fibre holds air, and air at the root is what keeps a wet medium from turning anaerobic. A mix carries both, so it drains quicker than a straight pith product and holds more than a straight chip.

Working With a Coco Coir Mix in Pots and Beds

A coco coir mix arrives as a brick, and the first job is getting water into it evenly. Set the block in a tub or a wheelbarrow, add warm water a few gallons at a time, and give it twenty minutes between additions. Breaking it up with a hand fork as it softens is quicker than waiting for the centre to wet through on its own. A dry core in the middle of a filled pot is the usual result of rushing that step. Coir carries calcium and magnesium exchange sites that it will trade against whatever is in the feed. That is why a coir grow asks for cal-mag early, and why the first few feeds can look like they vanished. Run the first water through and read the runoff before committing a whole bench to it. Once it is charged, coir wants more frequent and lighter watering than a peat-based soil does. It drains fast and it does not hold a reserve the way a heavy mix will. Plenty of growers settle on daily feeding in smaller containers and a drip line in larger ones. Reused coir compacts and loses air, so a second run wants fresh material blended through it. Keep unopened blocks dry and off a bare concrete floor, since compressed fibre will wick moisture from underneath.

Key Features

  • Expands past 2.5 cu ft: One block fills out to more than two and a half cubic feet.
  • Compressed for shipping: At 10.15 lb dry it moves and stores far easier than bagged medium.
  • Organic coco coir: Husk fibre and pith from the coconut rather than a peat base.
  • OMRI listed: Cleared for use in certified organic growing programmes.
  • Fibre and pith together: Pith carries the water while fibre keeps air at the root.
  • Indoor, outdoor and hydroponic: Works as a container mix, a bed amendment or an inert substrate.
  • Stores dry: A block on a shelf loses nothing while it waits for a run.
