PRO-MIX BX Mycorrhizae: General-Purpose Peat Mix With Live Fungi
This BX formula from Premier Tech is a general-purpose professional growing medium built on peat. The base is Canadian sphagnum peat moss, at 75 to 85 percent of the volume. Horticultural-grade perlite opens the mix for air and drainage, while horticultural-grade vermiculite holds water and nutrients. Dolomitic and calcitic limestone adjust the pH, and a wetting agent helps the peat take up water evenly. The mix also carries a mycorrhizal inoculum, Glomus intraradices. These microscopic fungi attach to and colonize the root system. They increase the uptake of water and nutrients, especially phosphorus, copper and zinc. Premier Tech links that partnership to better overall growth and higher yields of flowers and fruits. Out of the bag, the pH runs 5.2 to 6.2, with an EC of 1.0 to 1.8 mmhos/cm. A balanced starter charge of macro and micronutrients feeds the first stage of growth. Air porosity measures 12 to 17 percent, and water-holding capacity reaches 60 to 75 percent by volume. Bulk density stays light at 8 to 10 lb per cubic foot. The bale holds 3.8 cu ft compressed and loosens to a minimum of 7 cu ft. A full bale weighs 60 to 75 lb, depending on moisture.
Planting and Feeding in a Peat-Based Growing Medium
Break the compressed bale apart and fluff the mix before filling containers. Premier Tech rates it for bedding trays, propagation, hanging baskets, potted flowers, perennials, foliage, stock plants and long-term crops. It also suits vegetable transplants in large cell trays. Mycorrhizal colonization works best when seedlings move into the mix just after their first true leaves appear. Colonization and growth response vary from one plant species to another. Water the containers thoroughly after planting so the whole root zone is evenly wet. The starter charge does not last a whole crop. Begin fertilizing within seven days of planting, then keep feeding through the whole crop cycle. Base the feed program on your water's nutrient content, the crop and its stage of growth. Test the medium, the feed solution and plant tissue now and then to keep nutrients on target. Peat holds plenty of water, so let the top of the container dry slightly between irrigations. Dry mix can raise dust, so open bales in a ventilated spot and avoid breathing it in.
