PRO-MIX BX Biofungicide + Mycorrhizae: Peat Mix With Root Protection
This BX formula from Premier Tech is a general-purpose professional growing medium built on Canadian sphagnum peat moss. Peat makes up 75 to 85 percent of the volume, blended with perlite, vermiculite and dolomitic and calcitic limestone. Perlite adds drainage and air porosity, while vermiculite improves nutrient retention. A wetting agent helps water penetrate and wet the mix evenly. Two living ingredients go into every bag. The biofungicide is Bacillus pumilus strain GHA180, registered with the EPA under registration number 74267-4. Those bacteria colonize developing root systems and suppress Pythium, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Alternaria and Aspergillus. They also act as a biostimulant that grows along with the roots, giving more uniform stands after transplanting. The second ingredient is the endomycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices. It attaches to the roots and forms an extensive mycorrhizal network through the mix. That network increases the uptake of water and nutrients, especially phosphorus, copper and zinc. In exchange, the plant feeds the fungus soluble sugars. Premier Tech rates the texture as medium, with medium-high moisture retention and a low weight. Each 3.8 cu ft compressed bag weighs 60 to 75 lb. The biofungicide version is offered in the United States.
Getting the Most From a Biofungicide Mycorrhizae Mix
Open the bag at the time of seeding, potting or transplanting. Use the mix as it comes, adding water until it feels slightly moist to the touch. Set potting benches and equipment in a clean, weed-free area. Transplant cuttings, plugs or seedlings without pressing the medium down around the roots. Water again after transplanting to settle the medium. Start a fertilizer program once the first set of true leaves appears. Do not add fertilizer when sowing seeds. The mix suits plants that need a growing pH between 5.0 and 7.0. Irrigate early in the day so foliage and the medium surface can dry by evening. Water thoroughly so it runs through, which prevents salt buildup and keeps containers wetting and drying evenly. Never sterilize or pasteurize this medium. The label limits use to protected spaces such as greenhouses and glasshouses. Anyone opening bags or filling potting machines should wear an N-95 or better dust respirator. Keep bags sealed and dry, since wet mix in storage climbs in pH as the limestone activates. Performance is best within a year of the manufacturing date printed on the bag.
