QuietCool ES-2250 Whole House Fan for Homes up to 1250 Sq Ft
The QC ES-2250 is a ducted whole house fan from QuietCool's Energy Saver line. It pulls cooler outdoor air in through open windows and pushes warm indoor air up into the attic. That air then leaves through the attic vents. On high it moves 2,492 CFM and draws 150 W. Low speed moves 1,991 CFM on 79.5 W. QuietCool rates it for up to 1250 sq ft, based on 2 CFM per square foot. The motor head hangs from the rafters on a strap rather than resting on the ceiling. An acoustically lined duct, six feet long and 16 in across, joins it to a damper box at the ceiling. R5 barometric dampers close when the fan stops, keeping attic air out of the living space. The removable egg-crate grille measures 16 x 20 in. The ceiling opening is 14.25 by 18.25 inches, and it fits joists on 16 or 24 in centers with no framing or joist cutting. The fan runs on 120 VAC, 60 Hz.
Installing the Attic Fan and Running It at Night
Before installing, plug the fan in with its supplied cord to confirm it runs. Mark the spot from below, then check it from the attic with the cardboard template. Leave at least 30 in of clearance above the opening. Cut the ceiling opening, then carry the motor head, duct and damper box into the attic. Hang the motor head from two screws in a rafter, with its handy box at the top. Angle the housing slightly up and give the duct a gentle bend. That keeps noise down and avoids stirring blown-in insulation. Two-speed wiring needs an 8-hour timer and a HIGH-LOW-OFF switch, sold separately as IT-30070 and IT-35000. Attic venting has a big effect on performance. QuietCool calls for at least 3.33 sq ft of net free vent area for this model. Never run the fan with every window closed. Start it in the evening, once the air outside is cooler than inside. Open a few windows partway in the rooms to cool first, since wide-open windows weaken the breeze. Switch to low once the house has cooled and let it run through the night. In very humid climates, cover the damper box with insulation to limit condensation. The 10-year warranty covers the motor fan assembly in a residential install, with one year on the grille, housing and controls.
