QuietCool ES-3100 Whole House Fan for Homes up to 1550 Sq Ft
QuietCool's QC ES-3100 is a ducted whole house fan in the Energy Saver line. It draws fresh outdoor air in through open windows and sends warm indoor air into the attic, where it exits through the vents. High speed moves 3,081 CFM at 285 W. Low speed moves 2,020 CFM at only 80.8 W. QuietCool rates it for homes up to 1550 sq ft, at 2 CFM for each square foot. The motor head is suspended from a rafter on a hanging strap, away from the ceiling. A six-foot acoustically lined duct, 16 in across, links it to the ceiling damper box. When the fan stops, R5 barometric dampers close and keep attic air out of the rooms below. The removable egg-crate grille measures 16 x 24 in. Its ceiling opening is 14.25 by 22.25 inches. That opening fits joists on 16 or 24 in centers, so no framing or joist cutting is needed. Power is 120 VAC at 60 Hz.
Fitting the Attic Fan and Running It After Sunset
Plug the fan in with its supplied cord and confirm it runs before any cutting. Choose the location from below, then confirm it in the attic with the cut-out template. Allow at least 30 in of clearance above the opening. After cutting the ceiling, bring the motor head, duct and damper box up into the attic. Hang the motor head from two wood screws in a rafter, keeping the handy box on top. Tilt the housing slightly upward and bend the duct gently. This lowers noise and keeps the fan from disturbing blown-in insulation. Wiring both speeds takes an 8-hour timer and a HIGH-LOW-OFF switch, sold separately as IT-30070 and IT-35000. Good attic venting is what lets the fan reach its rated airflow. QuietCool recommends at least 4.11 sq ft of net free vent area for this model. Keep some windows open whenever the fan runs. Turn it on in the evening, once outdoor air is cooler than the house. Crack a few windows in the rooms to cool first; opening them too wide weakens the breeze. Drop to low after the house cools and leave it running overnight. Where summers are very humid, insulate over the damper box to reduce condensation. The 10-year warranty covers the motor fan assembly in a home install, with one year on the grille, housing and controls.
