Why the Hanna EC Probe Is Graphite

Graphite does not plate up with salts the way a metal pin does, so the reading holds as the electrode ages in a nutrient tank. This is the amperometric graphite sensor, part HI73311. It unscrews from the meter body using the removal tool that shipped with the tester, and the new one screws straight on. It fits the DiST 5 and the DiST 6, sold as HI98311 and HI98312.

Knowing When a DiST 5 Probe Is Actually Finished

The tell is calibration. When the meter will not hold a one point calibration against a fresh standard, the sensor is finished rather than the tester. The same goes for a reading that drifts while the probe sits still in one sample. Rinse it in clean water after each reading. Nutrient salts that dry on the graphite are what shorten its working life more than anything else. The cost is the thing to weigh. A spare sensor is a real share of what a whole tester costs. If the meter is old and the display is tired as well, a new pen may be the better call.
