Compressed propagation starter blocks made from coir fibre with the fine dust screened out. Each disc ships at 9.5 by 9.5 by 1 cm and opens to roughly 10 by 10 by 5 cm once wetted, holding 0.5 to 0.6 litres. Riococo publish a pH of 5.5 to 6.5, an EC of 0.5 mS/cm and air filled porosity of 10 to 14 percent. They are supplied 275 blocks to a case.

Propagation Starter Blocks That Ship Flat

Each block arrives as a compressed square disc measuring 9.5 by 9.5 by 1 cm. Add water and it opens to roughly 10 by 10 by 5 cm, which is four inches square and two deep. Volume lands between 0.5 and 0.6 litres. Shipping them flat is the whole commercial argument, because a case of 275 takes the space of a shoebox instead of a pallet. The fibre is coir with the fine dust screened out, which is what keeps the structure airy rather than claggy. The pH sits between 5.5 and 6.5 and an electrical conductivity of 0.5 mS/cm. Air filled porosity runs 10 to 14 percent and water holding capacity 6.5 to 7.5 litres per kilo. Organic matter is 95 to 98 percent by weight. The sack they come in is cellulose and biodegrades.

Why Coco Coir Suits a Propagation Bench

Rooting is a balance between wet and airy, and getting it wrong kills a tray either way. A medium that holds too much drowns the cutting before it puts out a root. One that holds too little dries between checks. Those porosity and water figures are what that balance looks like on paper. The structure stays open through the whole propagation cycle rather than collapsing halfway. That matters, because a slumped block strangles the root it was meant to hold. Transplanting is the other advantage. The block goes into the next container whole and the roots never get disturbed. Riococo describe the material as fully organic and biodegradable. The honest limit is the starting EC. At 0.5 mS/cm this is close to inert, so the feed programme is entirely yours to supply from the first watering.

Key Features

  • Format: Compressed disc that expands when wetted
  • Dry size: 9.5 by 9.5 by 1 cm, so a case ships small
  • Wet size: Roughly 10 by 10 by 5 cm, or 4 by 4 by 2 inches
  • Volume: 0.5 to 0.6 litres once open
  • Material: Coir fibre with the fine dust screened out
  • pH and EC: pH 5.5 to 6.5 at an EC of 0.5 mS/cm
  • Air and water: 10 to 14 percent porosity, 6.5 to 7.5 litres per kilo held
  • Transplant: Goes into the next container whole, roots undisturbed
  • Case: 275 blocks in a biodegradable cellulose sack
