Royal Gold Planting Mix: Perlite-Free Fill Built From Coco and Forest Fiber
This is a perlite-free growing medium that works as a standalone fill and as a soil amendment. The base is coco fiber, aged forest products and worm castings, so a bag opens dark, fibrous and earthy rather than white-speckled. A moderate organic charge rides along with it. Feather, bone, fish bone, fish, crustacean, kelp and alfalfa meals carry it, plus a little bat guano. Minerals round out the blend, with potassium magnesium sulfate, sulfate of potash, gypsum, wollastonite and basalt. The bag label reads 0.5-0.05-0.1 with 1.0% calcium. All of that nitrogen is water-insoluble, so it releases slowly as soil life breaks it down. Royal Gold lists the mix at pH 6.0 to 6.5, the range where most vegetables, fruit and ornamentals take up nutrients without a fight. Each bag holds 1.5 cubic feet and weighs about 35 lb, and this pallet stacks 60 bags for 90 cubic feet of finished mix. That puts roughly 3.3 cubic yards on site in a single delivery. The blend comes out of Royal Gold's Humboldt County operation, which still mixes and bags in small batches. Leaving perlite out is a deliberate choice. No white grains float up after a hard rain, and the fiber slowly works down into the soil underneath.
Filling Raised Bed Soil, Amending Ground and Topdressing From One Pallet
Most of a pallet ends up in raised beds, whether they are new frames or tired ones that slumped over the winter. Fill the frame, water it in until the fiber darkens all the way through, and plant the same day. Two 4 x 8 ft beds built 12 in deep take about 64 cubic feet, which leaves enough over for a long row of containers. As an amendment, work it into the top layer of native ground before setting trees, shrubs or a vegetable row. Spread 2 in deep as a mulch or top-dress, the whole stack covers roughly 540 square feet. Nurseries and landscape crews run it from seed flats through large hanging planters, because the fiber holds its air and water across a long season. The built-in charge carries young plants through establishment, and after that the feeding is yours. Slow-release granular and liquid programs both sit well on top of it, organic or salt-based. Heavy feeders such as tomatoes and squash will likely want extra nitrogen by midseason. The honest limit is drainage. With no perlite, its air space comes from fiber alone, so watch watering in cool, wet weather and in pots without good drain holes. A full pallet also needs a dry spot, a pallet jack and a tarp until the last bag is opened.
Key Features
- Perlite-Free Fiber Base: Coco fiber and forest products build the structure, so nothing washes out of the bed.
- Worm Castings and Organic Meals: Castings and organic meals give new plantings a moderate start before your own feeding takes over.
- Mineral Additions: Gypsum, wollastonite, basalt and potassium magnesium sulfate add calcium, magnesium, silicon and trace minerals as the blend ages in the ground.
- Garden-Friendly pH: The listed pH range sits where most garden crops feed comfortably, so the mix goes straight from bag to bed.
- Four Jobs, One Mix: It works as standalone raised bed fill, in-ground amendment, container mix, and mulch or top-dress around landscape plantings.
- Indoor, Greenhouse or Outdoor: The same bag serves greenhouse benches, indoor containers and outdoor beds, so one pallet covers a whole operation.
- Full Pallet Format: Sixty bags on one pallet suit landscape installs, community gardens and a full season of bed building without repeat deliveries.
