The Ruck 14 inch back draught damper stops air flowing back through a 14 in duct when the fan is off. Spring-loaded aluminium flaps seat on a rubber seal inside a galvanized steel housing, making it a backdraft shutter that mounts horizontally or vertically.

How the 14 Inch Back Draught Damper Seals an Idle Duct

Mechanical, not electrical, which is the whole design brief. Spring-loaded aluminium flaps open under the fan's airflow and fall onto a rubber seal the moment it stops. The galvanized sheet steel housing takes the 14 in bore. There is no actuator, no wiring and no control signal to lose.

Mounting a Backdraft Shutter in the Right Place

It can be mounted either horizontally or vertically because the flaps are sprung, not gravity-hung. Fit it downstream of the fan, flaps opening with the flow. There is a modest static pressure cost, which at this size is worth it for the reverse-flow it stops. The maintenance is trivial and mostly ignored: clean the rubber seat, or dust will hold the flaps a fraction open. Expect a distinct thump when the fan stops. That is the flaps seating, and it is normal.

Key Features

  • Spring-Loaded Aluminium Flaps: Open on airflow and close under spring pressure, with nothing to power.
  • Rubber Seal: Closes the gap at the seat so a stopped duct actually stays shut.
  • Galvanized Steel Housing: Corrosion-resistant in the damp air an exhaust run carries.
  • Horizontal or Vertical Mounting: Spring loading means it does not depend on gravity to close.
  • 14 in Duct Fit: Matches Ruck 14 in components and standard 14 in ducting.
  • Fully Mechanical: No wiring, no actuator and no control signal to lose.
