Turn a fan off and the duct becomes a hole in your wall. Cold air comes back down it, and so does everything the neighbours are cooking. Mounting a Backdraft Shutter in the Right Place
Spring loading is why this one can go in vertically as well as horizontally; a plain gravity flap cannot. Mount it after the fan, flaps opening with the flow. There is a trade-off worth naming: any damper in the airstream costs a little pressure, so size the fan with that in mind. Wipe the rubber seat occasionally, since grime on the seal is the usual reason a damper stops sealing. Listen for a soft clap when the fan stops; that is the flaps seating as they should.
