Servicing the MERV 5 Intake Filter
The lid is held by a toggle fastener, so swapping the mat takes no tools and about a minute. Change it every three to six months, sooner in a dusty space. Do not confuse this with odour control. It filters particles coming in and does nothing for smell going out, which is still a carbon filter's job on the exhaust side. Expect a small pressure drop that increases as the mat fills. Put it at the room end of the intake, where the mat is easy to reach for changing.
