What RTU Coco Grow Bags Take Out of a Transplant Day
A compressed coco block has to be broken up, soaked, expanded, checked and then loaded into something. These skip all of it. The bag arrives filled, tear the perforated top, open it out and plant. That is the whole labour case, and it is the reason a pallet of these competes against a lower-priced pallet of blocks. Four details in the bag itself are worth knowing. The top is perforated to tear cleanly rather than cut, so nobody is putting a blade near the root zone. There are 32 drainage holes punched only part of the way through. They keep coco inside the bag on the truck and open under the first irrigation. Microperforations run across the whole bag for air exchange at the root wall. The drain holes are spread in several directions so water does not pool in a corner. A 6 in gusset gives the bag a base wide enough that it does not tip when it is handled wet. The outside is dark green, which keeps light off the medium and holds algae down on a wet bench. Two sizes come on a full pallet. The small one takes 400 bags and the large one 350.
Why Buffered Coco Coir Is Not Optional at This Scale
Raw coco arrives loaded with sodium and potassium sitting on its exchange sites. Feed it and the coco swaps those ions for your calcium and magnesium. The first weeks of a run then go on feeding the medium rather than the plant. Buffering does that swap at the factory with a calcium solution, so the sites are already occupied when the bag reaches you. RX Green state this coco is always buffered, which removes the step and the guesswork. Published pH sits between 5.5 and 7.0, and the coco is OMRI Listed. The testing programme is the other half of the story. Third party labs check pH, conductivity, mineral content, heavy metals, pesticide residue and microbials. RX Green describe five quality tests, run at source, on arrival in the US, and again before shipping. That matters because contaminated coco is a recall, not an inconvenience. One claim on this page needs qualifying rather than repeating. RHP certification of the source farms is stated here but does not appear on the manufacturer's own product page. Ask for the certificate if it has to go in a file.
Key Features
- Arrives filled and ready: No breaking up a block, no soaking, no expanding, no pot washing.
- Tear-open top: Perforated so it opens by hand, with no blade near the root zone.
- 32 part-punched drain holes: Closed on the truck, open under the first irrigation.
- Microperforations throughout: Air exchange at the root wall rather than only at the base.
- 6 in gusset: A base wide enough that a wet bag does not tip when handled.
- Dark green outer: Keeps light off the medium, which holds algae down on a bench.
- Always buffered, OMRI Listed: The calcium swap happens at the factory, not in your first feed.
- Tested at three points: At source, on arrival in the US, and again before shipping.
