The ingredients are Canadian sphagnum peat moss, coir, perlite, dolomite lime, calcium silicate, an endomycorrhizal blend and an organic wetting agent. Peat and coir hold the water, while perlite keeps air space around the roots. It carries an OMRI Listing for organic gardening. It also contains RESiLIENCE, the maker's soluble silicon source. Drainage rates on the high side, with a medium particle size and medium water retention. Plan your feed early, because the starter charge is deliberately modest and low in phosphorus. Growers should begin feeding within 7 days of planting or seedling emergence. Waiting longer than that risks a hungry plant in a mix that looks fine from above.

Working With a Peat Based Growing Mix

A compressed bale saves a lot of floor space until you need it, but it does want some handling. Cut the bag open over a tub or tarp, then break the brick up by hand or with a fork before you pot. Peat can repel water once it dries down, and the wetting agent is what lets it take water evenly. Even so, moisten the loose mix before filling pots rather than watering dry media after planting. The lime brings pH into a workable range, so test your runoff once you settle into a feeding routine. Keep the mix away from phosphorus-heavy feeds in the first weeks, since high phosphorus works against mycorrhizal colonization. Sun Gro points it at houseplants, indoor containers, vegetables and herbs. Fabric pots and rigid containers both work, though fabric dries down noticeably faster. An open bale should stay closed and dry between uses, because the living inoculant has a limited shelf life. At this weight the bale is a two-handed lift, so bring it close to the potting area before opening it.
