What the TrolMaster 110V Control Board Switches

The OA6-110 is a six-outlet relay board for the Aqua-X irrigation controller. Each outlet is switched on its own, carries 120 VAC and is rated for a load of 1.5 A. The whole board is limited to a 9 A input. That is the range of small irrigation pumps and 120 V solenoid valves, which is what TrolMaster built it for. A LED sits beside each outlet to show whether it is live. A power LED on the board flashes once a second until the controller has adopted it. Two RJ12 sockets on the board take the signal in from the controller and pass it on to the next board. Up to five boards chain together on one Aqua-X, which puts thirty switched outlets under one schedule. The controller labels the boards A, B, C and so on in the sequence they are added. Each one is adopted by pressing the addressing button on the board itself. The board ships with a 16 ft RJ12 cable in the box. It is rated for indoor use at 32 to 122 °F and up to 90 percent humidity, with IP20 ingress protection. The electronics are FCC and ETL registered, and TrolMaster carries a three year warranty on it. One controller writes the schedule, and each pump or valve gets its own outlet with its own on time rather than sharing a power strip.

Setting Up an Aqua-X Pump Relay Module Zone by Zone

An Aqua-X pump relay module goes between the controller's logic and the wet end of the room, so wire it like the thing it is. Run the RJ12 from the 110V CONTROL port on the bottom of the Aqua-X to either socket on the first board. Power the board and watch the LED flash, then press the addressing button and wait for the controller to confirm board A on its screen. Add the second board from the free socket on the first, address it, and keep going up to five. Address them in the sequence they sit on the wall, because the letters are the only identity the controller has for them. Keep each load under the per-outlet rating and the sum under the board's input ceiling. A pump that trips that line belongs on a contactor, with the board switching the contactor coil instead. Connect the ground, since a short on a wet bench needs somewhere to go other than through the board. Mount the board above the splash line and where it can be pulled out quickly if an outlet fails. Water and irrigation relays have a short acquaintance. Label every outlet with its zone before the pumps go in. Six identical sockets with six identical LEDs look the same at two in the morning when a zone will not shut off. Run each zone manually from the controller once before trusting the schedule, and watch the right LED come on for the right pump. Wipe the board with a dry cloth when it dusts up, and leave the cabinet closed, because opening it ends the warranty.
