What the TrolMaster SA-NTC Is and How It Reads
The letters describe the technology. NTC stands for negative temperature coefficient, which means the resistance of the element drops as the temperature climbs. There is no electronics in the probe at all. The controller applies a small voltage, measures what comes back, and converts that resistance into a figure on the display. That simplicity is why these probes last, and it is also why their failures look the way they do. A cut or crushed lead reads as an open circuit. A controller seeing an open circuit displays an extreme value or an error rather than a plausible wrong number. A partly damaged cable is harder, because it can read plausibly and still be wrong by several degrees. If a room is holding a temperature that does not match a separate thermometer, suspect the probe before suspecting the controller. This part fits the Beta-2 and the Beta-4, both of which ship with one in the box.
Probe Placement, and the Feedback Trap on a Fan Controller
Where the probe hangs decides what the controller actually controls. Put it at canopy height, since that is the air the crop is living in rather than the warmer layer at ceiling level. Keep it out of direct lamp light. A sensor absorbing radiant heat reads higher than the air around it, and the room then runs colder than intended. Shade it or tuck it behind something opaque. Now the trap specific to a fan controller. Never hang the probe in the airstream of the fan the controller is driving. Doing that creates a loop. The fan blows cool air across its own sensor, the sensor reports that the room is fine, and the fan slows down. The reading then climbs again and the fan surges. The result is a fan that hunts constantly and a room that never settles. Place it away from the fan and away from any duct discharge. Secure the lead so it cannot be pulled, since a tug at the connector is how most of these fail.
Key Features
- Function: Replacement temperature probe for the Beta-2 and the Beta-4
- Technology: A negative temperature coefficient thermistor
- How it works: Resistance falls as temperature rises and the controller converts it
- No electronics: Nothing active inside the probe, which is why they last
- Open circuit: A cut lead shows as an extreme reading or an error
- Partial damage: A damaged cable can read plausibly and still be several degrees out
- Placement: At canopy height rather than in the warm layer near the ceiling
- Light: Keep it shaded, since radiant heat makes a probe read high
- Fan controller trap: Never hang it in the airstream of the fan it is controlling
- Cable care: Secure the lead, because a pulled connector is the usual failure
