Cloning Gel + Solutions

Cloning gel delivers rooting hormone right where new roots form and seals the cut while a cutting settles into its plug. Soft cuttings take a low-strength gel or powder. Clone mists and solutions carry trays through the days before roots appear.

Cloning Gel + Solutions

Cloning Gel, Rooting Hormones and Clone Solutions

Cloning gel coats the cut end of a cutting with rooting hormone and seals the wound while new roots form. This collection carries gels, powders, mists and feeds from Clonex, Ventana, Hormex, Olivia's and Athena. For aeroponic setups, see our guide to rooting hormones and cloning machines for aeroponic cloning....

These products sit under propagation. Cuttings that go into air or water need a cloning machine rather than a plug.

Types of Rooting Products

Rooting Gels

Gels cling to the stem instead of running off. Clonex carries 0.31% IBA with trace minerals, and Ventana Cloning Gel carries 0.5% IBA with vitamin B1 and no dyes. Athena Cuts and Power Clone also come in squeeze or dip formats.

Rooting Powders and Dips

Hormex numbers its powders by strength. Number 1 holds 0.10% IBA for soft cuttings, and stronger numbers suit woody stems. Dip N Grow is a liquid concentrate labeled for ornamentals only, so check the label before using it on food crops.

Clone Solutions, Mists and Root Enhancers

Clonex Mist sprays the leaves and contains no hormone. Clonex Clone Solution feeds rooted clones at 10 mL per liter. Olivia's uses willow-derived IBA at 6 oz per gallon, and RapidStart and Hydroguard support roots after they appear.

How Growers Take Cuttings

Cut 3 to 6 inches below a node at a 45 degree angle with clean tools. Pour gel into a small cup rather than dipping into the bottle. Keep cuttings warm and humid, around 75 to 85°F per Olivia's label, until roots show.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to use cloning gel?

Pour a little into a clean cup and dip the fresh cut to the depth it will sit in the plug. Then stick it straight into moist media. Ventana recommends coating the whole buried section. Discard leftover gel from the cup rather than pouring it back into the bottle.

Is rooting powder or gel better?

Both deliver IBA; the difference is handling. Gel clings and seals the cut, which suits plugs and cubes. Powder lets you match strength to the stem, from Hormex number 1 at 0.10% IBA for soft growth up to stronger numbers for wood.

How to get clones to root fast?

Start with healthy mother plants and clean cuts, then hold steady warmth and high humidity under a dome. Clonex suggests misting mother tips once or twice in the two weeks before cutting. Avoid overwatering plugs, and keep light gentle until roots appear.
