Aquaponics Systems

Aquaponics systems are a combination of raising fish (aquaculture) and hydroponics that raises fish and plants together in one integrated system. This mutually beneficial arrangement works by fish waste providing an organic food source for the plants along with a little help from nitrifying bacteria to break down the waste ammonia into nitrates, and the plants naturally filter the water for the fish.

As a closed-loop cycle, first the fish produce waste, then microbes (and often worms) convert the waste into fertilizer for the plants, which then filter the water before it returns to the fish, this completes the aquaponics system.
