Double Ended + CMH Fixtures

Double ended CMH and DE HPS fixtures put high, even light over a commercial canopy from a single housing with the ballast built in. Pick a 1000W DE HPS fixture for flower rooms and a 630W CMH fixture for full-cycle growing. Small rooms and greenhouses suit a 150W or 315W unit.

Double Ended CMH and DE HPS Grow Light Fixtures

Double ended CMH and DE HPS fixtures are complete commercial lights, with lamp, ballast and reflector in one housing. The range runs from 150W Endomaxx units to 1000W DE fixtures from Iluminar, MegaPhoton and Matrix. For lamp swaps, compare the results of our best 1000W double ended bulb test....

Single-lamp 315W fixtures also appear in our ceramic metal halide grow lights. Replacement lamps sit in Double Ended DE, and LED options live in the wider grow lights range.

Types of DE and CMH Fixtures

1000W DE HPS Fixtures

Iluminar and MegaPhoton rate their 1000W DE fixtures at about 2,100 µmol/s, covering a 4x4 to 5x5 ft footprint. MegaPhoton dims from 600 to 1150W on 277 to 347V. The Matrix DE ships with its lamp and steps from 50% to 115%. Pick these for flower rooms built around HPS.

630W CMH Fixtures

The Sun System LEC 630 runs two Philips 315W lamps on 347 or 480V, in 3100K or 4200K. Iluminar offers a 630W double ended CMH fixture that also fires HPS and MH lamps, plus a dual-lamp model. Both Iluminar units work with Gavita EL1/EL2 controllers.

315W and Smaller Fixtures

Endomaxx 150 and 315 luminaires are rated for greenhouse and wet locations. The DLI CRI-Series 315W takes 120 to 347V in a shallow housing. DLI also makes a 150W UV fixture that adds ultraviolet beside your main lights.

How Growers Use DE and CMH Fixtures

Match voltage first: several fixtures run only on 277V or higher, and the LEC 630 needs 347 or 480V. Dimming lets you start seedlings low and push to full output in flower. Many rooms veg under CMH and finish under DE HPS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CMH grow light?

It is a ceramic metal halide lamp, which uses a ceramic arc tube instead of quartz. The light is broad spectrum and reads closer to sunlight than HPS. The Philips CDM-T Elite Agro lamps in the LEC 630 are rated at 92 CRI and hold 90% of output at 8,000 hours.

What is a double ended grow light?

It is an HID fixture whose lamp connects at both ends instead of screwing into one socket. A high-frequency ballast built into the housing drives the lamp. At 1000W, fixtures like the Iluminar DE and MegaPhoton put out about 2,100 µmol/s, enough for a 4x4 to 5x5 ft area.

CMH vs HPS: what's the difference?

HPS is red-heavy, which suits flowering. CMH spreads its output across the spectrum, so one lamp covers veg and bloom. In our own 315W lamp test, the Philips 3100K CMH gave the highest total PAR. That warm 3100K lamp behaves much like an HPS in flower.
